7 Basic Principles of the Government
By Alyse, Ana, and Karla
Alyse- Individual Rights & Popular Sovereignty
Individual rights are the rights of citizens in the U.S . Examples of the right they are given are freedom of speech, religion, and press. Overall, I think all citizens could agree individual rights are the most important basic principal.
Popular sovereignty is the principal that states the government is given it's authority by the consent of its people. It states that basically the people have the final say of government decisions. Popular sovereignty and individual rights are very closely related, with both of them stating the peoples rights.
Ana- Separation of Powers & Limited Government
3 different branches. Judicial- power to change laws. Legislative- makes the laws, made up of Senate and the House of Representatives. Executive - president responsible for enforcing the laws and vice president is part of it.
Advantage- keeps politics out of justice.
Disadvantages- It is not working very well
Limited government gives the citizens more control of their environment.
Advantages- less expensive, it has economy freedom, citizens have more freedom, and personal privacy.
Karla- Checks & Balances
The power of the government is distributed into 3 branches. No branch gets too much power. Each branch watches out so that the other branches don't get too much power.
Karla- Republicanism & Federalism
Republicanism is the idea of having a society or state as a republic. It implies the absence of monarchy, but it may also mean, "role by many people and by law". It would be where the head of state is the people who hold popular sovereignty instead of people being subjects.
Federalism is the division of power between the national and state governments. The national government cant take care of every detail in each state. Therefore, the power is divided between the national and state government.
